Life lessons from The Masked Singer

Over the past year, The Masked Singer has become one of my all-time favourite shows. It’s a lighthearted, fun-filled family show that is consumed with positivity, but also one with genuine learning opportunities. Here is what you can learn from watching The Masked Singer.

THE POWER OF POSITIVITY

The tone of The Masked Singer is perpetually positive. No matter how well or poorly a singer performs, the judges always find ways to praise them. Even if they are literally the worst singer of all time.

It’s a valuable lesson in the power of positivity. Sometimes the people in our lives are not going to be great. Sometimes this is going to take an emotional toll on us. But we must always remember to try and find the good in any situation. Any challenge presents an opportunity. If someone in our life fails to bring us value, we’re presented with an opportunity to test our patience. To grow. To stay positive. To create change.

If we can even take it one step further like the judges on the show, we can even reframe our priorities in that moment.

When contestants are utterly terrible at singing, the likes of Robin Thicke find anything else to praise instead – whether that be the energy, costume, or dancing. We don’t have to focus on the negative. Instead, we can find reasons to be positive. That goes for any situation.

This is easier said than done, but taking a step back and keeping emotions in check will often allow for an ease at which we can shift our priorities.

In building cultures of high-performance and high-achievement, this is an essential piece to the puzzle. Sometimes we can challenge each other and point out the room for improvements, but it should always start from a positive place with pure intentions. If the culture of a place can be kept positive from top-down and each individual’s own needs for security are attended to, everyone can thrive. That’s what we see on The Masked Singer, even in praising the most miserable of performers.

THE BATMAN EFFECT

About a month ago, I wrote about ‘The Batman Effect’ in my article I’m already Batman. The idea is that we can instantly become an amplified, confident version of ourselves ready to take on any situation and solve the most complex of tasks simply by embodying the persona of someone more confident. Batman handles even the most tense situations with poise and composure. If we’re Batman, so can we.

Beyonce and Adele used similar strategies to overcome stage fright, taking on completely different personas and alter egos when on stage.

This is one of the most powerful components to the show. With the help of the wildly creative costumes, contestants on The Masked Singer can be whoever they want to be. They can be any version of themselves. They can be an amplified self. They can even pretend to be someone else. In taking on that persona and living in their costume, they can enter uncharted territory and dominate the stage like never before.

Not only that. They can feel completely comfortable being themselves. Going all the way back to the first season of The Masked Singer U.S., T-Pain did the show so that he could show the world his real voice.

Contestants on the show often amplify their own personalities to a heightened, almost ‘better’ version of themselves to take on the role of a character. But deep down, it’s them. It’s the real them. Just a heightened level. If we can feel comfortable being that 2.0 version of ourselves all the time, we’ll allow others to feel comfortable being who they are and showing their personalities too.

This is a powerful reminder. If we feel ourselves struggling to complete a task, there’s a cheat code almost guaranteed to work. Become the most competent and confident person you can imagine. Amplify your own personality as if you are that capable, confident person completely unafraid to handle even the toughest of situations. The next level is to believe that you already are Batman, but embodying that persona is always a great place to start.

If you’ve never checked out The Masked Singer, you are missing out. Not only is it a fun, feel-good show. It’s also one that constantly brings good vibes, and reminds us of the power of keeping things positive and how that can create such a special environment for everyone to excel.
