This weekend marked the anniversary of one of my favourite races – Sulphur Springs. It’s the fastest and most competitive trail race in Ontario, and with its runnable terrain and modest elevation, provides the opportunity for trail and road runners to intertwine.
In Ontario, you don’t get that much high-quality, runnable trails, as they’re either more steep and technical, or flat like a rail-trail. Sulphur Springs is one of those few places where you can get decent elevation gain, while still running “fast” the entire time.
In the quest to prepare for mountainous races outside the province, a trail like this can begin to become underrated, as runners like my previous self, travel for hours to get the most vertical gain imaginable in places like Blue Mountain and Pretty River.
But in actuality, this isn’t necessary.
