Sulphur Springs is one of the biggest and best events in any calendar year inside Canada’s trail and ultra running scene. It’s an incredibly runnable race with several distances to choose from, making it accessible to road and trail runners alike.
Back in 2023, I made Sulphur Springs my first ever trail race as an adult, and my first ever ultramarathon. Despite the stern competition, I made it my mission to place on the podium, where I ran 3 hours and 46 minutes in my debut 50K, just milliseconds off catching Ontario trail running legend Matt Farquharson.

I know the training strategies that worked for me in podiuming at the race, and I’ve also watched my friends Rob Brouillette and Tanis Bolton put together key training blocks en route to winning the race.
So with that, I’m releasing a 50K training plan for intermediate/advanced runners to follow en route to whatever goals they want to accomplish.
This training plan can also go hand-and-hand with a different 50K trail race of your choosing, so long as it’s more of a runnable trail race with decent elevation gain, rather than a mountainous or flat one.
This training plan includes:
✅ A log for you to track your runs and cross-training, and record your thoughts on what worked/what didn’t each day.
✅ A comprehensive 10-week plan, including race-specific and periodized workouts toward the specifics of your race.
✅ Mobility and strength suggestions for each week of the block, going beyond just your run training.
* The plan works up to 8 hours of running, and is therefore not usually best for an elite trail runner aiming to podium at the race. For specific guidance around elite level trail training, reach out to me for 1-on-1 coaching!
